10 Reasons To Start Your Own Business

(2 minute read)

There are many valid reasons to start your own business or side hustle. Each small business owner is fueled by his or her own fire. While the phrase “small business” or “side hustle” may suggest or denote that it's no big deal, we disagree. It is a big deal to take that leap of faith and enter the arena of working for yourself. For many small business owners it’s life altering and marks the beginning of a new stage of growth and professional satisfaction. Along the journey solopreneurs and small business owners discover things about themselves that they could not have discovered any other way. While it really only takes one compelling reason to justify the decision to open your own business, we want to share with you some of the reasons we find most inspiring:

1) Passion: There is nothing quite like getting paid to pursue your passion. If you can successfully combine the two, you find yourself in a rare club.

2) Freedom: It’s hard to place a monetary value on being in control of your destiny and exercising your own professional discretion and judgment.

3) Innovation: If you are inventive, original, visionary or creative, you have your own platform to express yourself.

4) Niche: If there is a demand, need or market out there which is not being served, you can serve it yourself. Create a brand and identity all your own in the process.

5) Purpose: Building something consequential or worthwhile, which provides a valuable service or product to others, creates profound meaning and purpose in one’s own life.

6) Financial: If you succeed, the financial rewards are yours, to do with as you see fit.

7) Escape: If you do not like the current trajectory of your professional life, and feel trapped or stagnant, it may be time to defy conventional wisdom and get off the hamster wheel.

8) Satisfaction: It’s hard to imagine anything more satisfying than owning yourself, as opposed to being owned by someone, or something, else.

9) Challenge: If you want to be tested and discover if you have what it takes to rise to the occasion and set yourself apart, the arena is waiting.

10) Timing: Life is fleeting and much too short to condemn yourself to boredom, mediocrity or speculating about what could have been.

We recognize and acknowledge that opening a small business or side hustle does carry risk, comes at a cost and requires sacrifice. There is no guarantee of success and the path is not danger free. Nevertheless, in the spirit of risk and innovation we echo the sentiments of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche: “Danger alone acquaints us with our own resources, our virtues, our armor and weapons, our spirit, and forces us to be strong.”

Let's do this!
